DECOMMISSIONING

As an aircraft reaches the end of its economic or technical life it is time to plan to harvest it for engines and high value components. The option are numerous and can be categorized as follows:

Put the aircraft on a care & maintenance program.

Find alternative non-flying uses for it.

Harvest it  as a profit center or to save on costs.

Abandon it. (A frowned upon practice to be discouraged).

The litmus test for aircraft storage versus harvest is when the sum total of engines and fast selling high value items exceeds the market value of the aircraft in service. Aircraft do have some high value items that are slow to sell in the aftermarket and this needs to be taken into account as  part of the decision. The store or harvest decision will usually arrive when the aircraft approaches 30 year of life, when it is a high time aircraft and due major maintenance checks on the airframe or engines, or when it is restricted for commercial service for regulatory reasons such as noise and age limitations.
